What are the main purposes of commercial radio?

There are many purposes to commercial radio but one of the main ones is to make money to keep the station going. They do this by playing adverts that would interest the target audience of that radio station. For example, KISS 100 radio who are regulated by the ASA, play commercials that young people would listen to. They also advertise competitions that young people would most likely get involved with, they offer prizes like concert tickets and festival tickets. For the radio stations that are solely news based such as Sky News Radio or LBC, have less commercials and because they play less adverts, this means that they make less money. The more listeners they gain over time, the more ad offers they are likely to get, but these stations have smaller audiences.

In commercial radio the radio DJ's have to think about what time of day they're playing what ad. If it's in the morning they have to think about the slightly younger generation who may be listening in their parents cars on their way to school, as well as the afternoon when this particular target audience is most likely to be coming home from school. Whereas at night, they play adverts and songs less aimed at the slightly younger generation.

Seasonal Radio

The season has a big effect on what commercials play on the radio as well as TV. It is a way of generating more money because it is some kind of celebratory period for everyone such as Summer time, Christmas, Halloween and Valentines Day. For example Capital Radio promotes their yearly Summertime Ball and KISS have KISSMAS Bash every year around the Christmas time. The advertising alone for these events bring in plenty of money.

Another purpose of commercial radio is to sell products.
